“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6, ESV
Does anyone truly HUNGER and THIRST for righteousness?
My mind is blown away every time I read these three chapters that make up the Sermon on the Mount. My Bible is a colorful array of pink and yellow highlights throughout these powerful words of Jesus. As I read this scripture today, I am struck by the irony, probable paradox and oxymoronic nature of that statement. In a world where we very clearly see and understand man’s inclination towards sin and doing everything opposite of righteousness, it would appear to be very hard to see one looking for righteousness in their everyday life—hence, Jesus’ point. As we now know, we are not righteous apart from Jesus. Our focus in this verse—and all the Beatitudes that surround—has to be on Jesus. Our thirst is for Jesus. Our hunger is for Jesus. If we strive to be in His presence daily, then we will be satisfied and never disappointed.
Thank You for clear instruction. Thank You for the “easiest” of ways to righteousness—pursuit of Your Son. I pray that my heart and life will reflect a desire to be in Your presence daily, striving for righteousness as I move closer towards You. Forgive my lapses, for they are many. Show me that true hunger CAN BE satisfied.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
