Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6, ESV
It should be our pleasure to give back to the One who supplies all of our needs!
I will admit something that may seem a bit too prideful: I love when I close a big real estate deal! That would seem pretty obvious. But what I really like is when I get to stroke a big, fat tithe check as a result! I have learned over the past several years that God DOES watch out for my finances—it is not just hearsay! This passage of scripture has been the source of much confusion and the subject of what some would deem heresy, but when I look at it simply, it could not be more clear. Taking whatever stance one may or may not have about “tithing means 10% of what you earn” (that debate between the Old Testament model and what the New Testament says is for another day), it is VERY CLEAR Paul’s directive is not only to give, but to do so happily. But the benefits of giving are not merely financial. As one read’s further into the passage, that attitude of the heart that gives benefits the church, its people AND the righteousness of believers. It inspires people to be thankful, and God’s grace abounds to those who give joyfully. To any who may doubt, try it. See what happens. Give sacrificially with joy and see what God does. I dare you.
Thank You for showing us by example how to give sacrificially with joy. I pray that my heart will always be joyful in the giving back of what You ultimately allowed me charge over in the first place. May I be a good example of that giving to others.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
